During the Michigan Legislature’s Lame Duck Session — the period after the election but before newly elected lawmakers take office in January — which runs for at least two more weeks, anything can happen. Officials are no longer concerned with reelection, and they use this time to rush through controversial legislation.
Please take action to urge legislators to pass protective legislation for the environment and to stop proposals that threaten it. Take a few minutes to contact your own legislators on the SB241 listed below. Click these links for your State Representative and your State Senator.
Senate Bill 241: Sponsored by Senator Stephanie Chang, this bill would put in place a statewide moratorium on water shutoffs due to non-payment and ensure water service is restored to any Michigander shut off during the COVID-19 pandemic. Access to water is essential to human life at any time, but even more so during a public health pandemic when washing our hands and bathing is critical to limiting spread and exposure to COVID-19. Tell your elected officials to guarantee water to all Michiganders while we fight COVID-19–and beyond!
