Mission: The People’s Water Board Coalition advocates for the human rights to water, sanitation, equitable access, and affordability for impacted communities.

We are a coalition of three dozen grassroots groups, NGOs, faith-based, social justice, and community-based organizations who have come together to fight for the human right to safe, affordable water and sanitation. We believe water is part of a shared commons that is held in the public trust for the benefit of all people.

The People’s Water Board Coalition was formed in 2008 amidst a deepening crisis of water access and affordability in Michigan.

At the turn of the century, more than 40,000 households in the city of Detroit were experiencing water shutoffs. Residents in neighboring Highland Park were struggling to pay costly water, sewage, and drainage bills too. Community groups and advocates began meeting to discuss solutions and end the inhumane municipal actions that harmed vulnerable people. With Michigan Welfare Rights Organization and poverty law attorneys, they began working on a water affordability plan that would allow low-income people to pay what they can afford. Although an affordability plan was passed by Detroit City Council in 2005, it was never implemented. Today, we organize with residents in other Michigan cities and towns to ensure water affordability, consumer rights, and advocate for policies and legislation at the local, state, and federal levels to ensure water for all.
